RESEARCH- CONVENTIONS OF A DANCE MUSIC VIDEO

13. Define the key elements you must include in your video to conform to the expectations of the genre, the audience you expect and what is expected of a video. Make a checklist of things to include in your video.

The genre of my music video is deep house dance music. To conform with the expectations if this genre, there are certain things I have to include…

EDITING, CINEMATOGRAPHY

·      Fast cut shots in time with the dance beat, sustaining audience interest and preventing boredom, as well as enabling the audience to view different angles and areas of the video
·      High angle establishing shots to give the viewers a sense of the environment the video is shot in
·      Close up shots of people to show individual roles of different people
·      Fast shots add a sense of realism that there would be in a dance/club environment, as well as mid-shots of people dancing in time with the music
·      Set in lively atmosphere with lots of things going on simultaneously e.g. club, festival, party, beach – the audience can relate to these locations as they give conventions of people having a good time partying
·      Locations with lots of lighting and vibrant colours as they accompany the dance music and the sense of liveliness and feel good atmosphere
·      Slow motion editing to contrast the fast-edited shots of the video, allowing the audience to focus on certain aspects purposely designed to be focused on
·      Wide shots of locations and scenery to put emphasis on where the video has been set

CODES AND CONVENTIONS

·      Feature love, sexuality, having fun and things a young audience can relate to, revolving around youth and freedom
·      Clubbing/dance scenes, woman with minimal clothing, jumping/dancing around, beaches, pools, bright colours, drinking – wild and crazy atmosphere
·      In clubs, or concert crowds to inspire and encourage people to dance and they often have routines that are recognisable
·      The artist of the song tends not to feature in the music video as they usually have random narratives
·      Dominated by party lifestyles

MISE–EN-SCENE

Concert/festival crowds filled with young people dancing and jumping in time with the beat
·   Beach, sand, sea, blue skies – freedom and summer
·    Smoke/colour flare
jj  Young couple in love, either heterosexual or homosexual, spending their time together in the crowd
f   Strong friendship bond between girls in the crowd
·
